What could be more difficult for a painter than reproducing with a single still image all the intertwining of actions, thoughts and emotions contained in a literary fragment? An exhibition at the Prado shows us how “Rembrandt, painter of stories”, fought that battle, adding a few more difficulties. A challenge history has considered vanquished by him.

200 years ago, on May the 2nd 1808, Spain started its Independence War against Napoleon. There was no formal declaration of war, but rather the popular outburst of an invaded country and its outraged citizens. The next day, the prisoners of this (so long failed) rising were shot by the Imperial Army all around Madrid. Later Goya painted this his memorial to the victims.
